Milk Gone Wild: Udder Nonsense
A difficult problem for the Animal Rights crowd is the constant threat of marginalization as just another flock of crazed loons.
The latest example is here. While cleverly packaged, it is still one of the more odd and disgusting things I've ever seen on the Internet.
From a political standpoint, the Republicans should be thankful that the animal rights "wackos" have overwhelming preferred to associate with the Democrats. It's not altogether obvious that they would make such good bedfellows.
For example, the mechanized farming that the animal rights activists find so deplorable is actually the realization of a Socialist-Democrat Utopia. Every cow in the corporatist dairy barn is treated equally, with free access to healthcare, free housing, and perfect equality of outcome. The ugly tradition of patriarchical sexism is completely absent from the barn. (In fact females enjoy preferred status.) And while every cow is expected to do his or her best, there are no Glengarry-Glen-Ross-style machinations amongst the herd.
In the Milk Gone Wild video, the activists include scenes of suffering and dying cows in an attempt to portray the corporatist dairy barn as a harsh place to live. However, the death of cows living in the free-market wilderness is hardly more desirable... care to be torn apart by wolves or have your eyes plucked at by vultures, anyone?
The activists, by completely ignoring the realities of the free-market wilderness lifestyle, have erected a false dichotomy. Fortunately this chimera is easily dispelled. The reality of wilderness living is that the strong cows will attack and deprive the weakest cows in the herd, once again creating a privileged class in cow society. As the more powerful cows reserve for themselves the prime grazing lands, the lower-class will be left with only chaff and brambles.
Of course, the free-market types prefer the freedom to fail on one's own merits over equality of outcome and socialist utopia.
So is there any risk of these groups wiping the scales from their eyes and wishing to join the Libertarian wing of the Republican Big Tent?
